This video is one part of the British television series, that called “The
Adventure of English”. This
programme tells about the history of the English language from its modest
beginnings around 500 AD.
Melvyn Bragg is a presenter of this series. Moreover, he
is best known to the British public as a radio and television broadcaster. In the television series, Bragg explains the origins
and spelling of many words based on the times in which they were introduced
into the growing language that would eventually become modern English. Melvyn Bragg travels through Britain to tell the story
of how an insignificant German dialect, which only arrived in the country in
the fifth century, evolved into a language which is now spoken and understood
by more people than any other around the world. The video is divided into four parts:The first one tells story about trying to
destroy this language. The second programme tells how it survived and
how it fought back.The third part tells how the English language took on the power
blocks of church and state.And the last one tells how it became the language of Shakespeare. In addition, during all video Melvyn Bragg is talking
to language expert Kathryn A. Lowe, who tells many interesting things about history
of the English language. She offers wonderful insight into the evolution of
Anglo-Saxon and Old English. This is a very informative and interesting video. You
