Birth of a Language. Summary

    The film “The Adventure Of English - Birth of a Language” is concerned with history of English and how it was changing through the centuries.
    If we had an opportunity to hear the English Language 2 thousand years ago, the language would have been incomprehensible.  Now the language that sounds the closest to its old ancestor can be heard in Friesland, a province in the northwest of the Netherlands .
    The English language have its origins in 5th century when Germanic tribes, which also contained Jutes, Angles and Saxons, came to the territory of modern Britain and took their language with them. An original residents Celts should  adopt their language and their culture to stay alive.  Only a handful of words from the Celtic language survived in a modern English.
    English took its first steps from its tribal roots with revival of Christianity in 7th century. Christian missionaries brought to the country Latin. From this language of Christian religion English took its script. In that time the epic Beowulf was written.
    In the late eighth century a potential destroyers Viking arrived, burned religious centers and began to spread their language. Only Alfred the Great, the king of Wessex, could defended his Kingdom. One more his achievement is that he founded the translation from Latin into English.
A new conquerors from Normandy arrived in 1066. William I the Conqueror was the first king who spoke French.
    These were first steps to establishment English like a language of thousand million people around the world.
