The adventure of English-1.Birth of a language

    The film "The adventure of  English-1.Birth of a language" has introduced the development of English language.It absorbed different languages and cultures,perhaps it is one of the reasons  why  English has became now the language of  million people.Today English circles the globe.The film offers to us to explore how it has  became  the international language in the 21 century.
   1)  It is interesting to notice ,that 1,500 years ago on the island "Friesland" people used the language so similat to modern English.We can regognize some words: frost and freeze, blue,butter,bread,sleep,snow.The reason we can recognize these words- the same family of languages- the Germanic family.
    2) In 5 century Angles, Saxons ,then Celts came in this territories and brought thier language.Germanic tribes occupied half of Britain and brought new words,with wich we live today.
↵the ending -ing (in the modern place names)- means the people off -Darking, Ealing;
↿ton- means eclosure or a village - Taunton, Chessington)
↶ham-means farm- Cheltenham,Tottenham
   3)Some English words are 1,500 years old!
   4)A lot of the words came from Latin.
   5)English monk and scholar Bead was the first who wrote about the history of english-speaking people.
   6)English mixed with Danish /Now we can hear the echoes of Danes old language in the way people   speak.Some danish words stayed as the local dialects: beck is for stream,slattary is for shower.In English "you are sick",in north "you are ill".
   7)Old North lanhuage affected English language more than any other.
   8)Now we use prepositions instead of old English words endings.
   9)The King Alfred the Great made a depature from Latin to English language ,spreading it in his  Kongdom.
  10)English language absorbed French thanks The King William,who came in 1066.
 Castle,enemy were the 1st  of French words .In general, English absorbed more than 10.000 French  words( Crown,Courte,Cream,Fruit,market, ability,peasant vassal,prison,etc.)
       In conclusion, it should be add up,that English language made the difficalt way from it`s genesis to the it`s modern look.

English is now the most important and widespread language in the world.Over a thousand million people speak it as a mother tongue and it is one of the official languages in many countries.
The story of the English language is an extraordinary one.A well-known presenter Melvyn Bragg tells us about the birth and the development of this wonderful language.He familiarizes us with the history of Great Britain and how different tribes tried to change it.This video contains a lot of useful facts and gives everyone the conception of past events.It is very interesting to know,that the Germanic tribes were not the first who tried to invade the shores of Britain.More than 500 years before them the Romans had come by sea.Moreover,the Romans mispronounced the Greco-Roman word "Pretani"and called the island "Britannia".
During the film Bragg is talking to language expert Kathryn A.Lowe,who explains us the difference between different dialects.She is absolutely sure that most of the words come from Old English:nouns like "youth","son","daughter","field","friend",
prepositions like "in","on","into",all the numbers and verbs.
In addition we can know more about the Vikings-cruel pirates from Norway.Bragg tells that their arrival was not so cheerful because they wanted to conquer Britain.Fortunately,a brave King Alfred won a victory over them.A presenter says that Alfred taught people to develop their skills in learning.
Later,in 1066 ,the Norman invasion of England brought Britain into a mainstream of western European culture and William the Conqueror was the first king who spoke French.Actually,he was an organizer of the English kingdom according to the feudal system.
So,that was a first part of the documentary movie which is called "The Adventure of English".This short video was very useful for me and I would like to recommend  it to everyone,who wants to know more about the history of English !

    The film “The Adventure Of English - Birth of a Language” is concerned with history of English and how it was changing through the centuries.
    If we had an opportunity to hear the English Language 2 thousand years ago, the language would have been incomprehensible.  Now the language that sounds the closest to its old ancestor can be heard in Friesland, a province in the northwest of the Netherlands .
    The English language have its origins in 5th century when Germanic tribes, which also contained Jutes, Angles and Saxons, came to the territory of modern Britain and took their language with them. An original residents Celts should  adopt their language and their culture to stay alive.  Only a handful of words from the Celtic language survived in a modern English.
    English took its first steps from its tribal roots with revival of Christianity in 7th century. Christian missionaries brought to the country Latin. From this language of Christian religion English took its script. In that time the epic Beowulf was written.
    In the late eighth century a potential destroyers Viking arrived, burned religious centers and began to spread their language. Only Alfred the Great, the king of Wessex, could defended his Kingdom. One more his achievement is that he founded the translation from Latin into English.
A new conquerors from Normandy arrived in 1066. William I the Conqueror was the first king who spoke French.
    These were first steps to establishment English like a language of thousand million people around the world.

This video tells us about the history of English. It covers the period from 500 A. D. to our times. During first 300years it was the language spoken by underground, but it's international now.

The author said the first dwellers of England had been Romans. Then the territory was invaded by Germanic tribes. Only Celts survived (their language resembled the modern one which is widely used in Northern parts of England). So by the end of the 6th century Germanic tribes had divided mainland into a number of kingdoms: Kent, Sussex, Essex, Wessex, East Anglia, Mercia and Nothembria. By the way, 25 000words and endings -ing, -ton, -ham came to us from that times.

In 597 the monk and prior Augustan led a mission from Rome to Kent. Around the same time Irish monks of the Celtic Church were establishing a presence in the North. This is Singapore's in Jarrow parts of which date from 7th century. Latin words made English vocabulary richer. Runic alphabet appeared.

Christianity brought books to English shores. As it was mentioned in the video, the flourishing of English started. The first poem was "Beowulf".

Vikings who sacked and burned the religious centre, the church became bubbles around the vikings neck. Only Wessex still held out thanks to the king Alfred (the state to him was situated in Winchester now).

In 878 the Danes appeared to be a decisive battle. Running free in the Somerset Levels Alfred discovered the art of irregular warfare and magic guerrilla attacks against the occupying forces. As a result, Danish had an impact on the development of English too (e. g. endings -son, -um). But the spreading jewelled Alfred's crown.

Another wave of invaders began when in 1066 William Duke of Normand sailed with his army to claim the English throne.

The rest laid after Edwardian period. Then Harold crowned himself. But randomly he was fatally pierced.  The next king was William and the English language was influenced by French at that time (≈10 000words). The negative ruling classroom before the Cpngress had been slaughtered, banished or disinherited in favour of William's followers. Herat of the country was in the hands of just 190men and English had been forced in different ways. It took 300 years to reemerge.

For example,such words as butter , bread , cheese , meal , boat , snow , storm are very similar in both languages. It is because Frisian and English can both belong to the same family of languages. The presenter also tells us that the history of the English language is not only connected with the Germanic tribes , but with the Romans and the Celts too. From the language of the later one came many dialectic words and names of the cities. To learn additional information about the old English language Melvyn Bragg asks Kathryn A. Lowe, the language expert. Christian missioners made a contribution to the enrichment of English too. They brought Latin that is now an important part of modern English. The presenter pays our attention , that modern language is a poetic one. Beowulf, the  unique first book in Old English , was a source of it. This video claims a great role of Alfred , that is considered to be the defender of English, the influence of Danish , from which many words were borrowed , and the Normans, whose king William spoke French , therefore there are many French words in English ( more than 10 , 000 words ).

The day began as usual. I woke up in the early morning, brushed my teeth and came to breakfast. I went out to take the bike and met my neighbor Mrs. Finch. She called :«Good morning, Theo! I'm here, on the right». Mrs. Finch was a wonderful woman, but she was so old and still can`t understand that I was not totally blind.

I was riding a bike and enjoyed good weather. I felt  the sun's rays on my skin and the wind in my hair. I loved the wind. It couldn’t be seen ,but could be felt. And most importantly, it was with all the people and not only with me and my eyes.

I went into the gym and walked over to the group.  James greeted me and told about an incredible event. There was a girl in the group. Previously, there were only boys. Other guys told that her name was Alexandra and she was 9 years old. Our teacher came in and began training . I stood up on my place and suddenly heard a voice : «Hi, I’ll stand next to you, okay?» .I realized that it was a girlish voice, the most beautiful voice in the world.

Training was over and I went to the locker room. I groped for my backpack and went to take a bike. There was another bike next to my bike. It was so bright and rainbow that even I could see him. There were Alexandra in front of him. « Weather is wonderful ,isn`t it  ? It’s the best time for a walk in the park»-she said.

We went to the park and settled on the grass. Alexandra told me that when she was 5 years old, she had an accident together with her parents,where she received severe injury. She had an eyes surgery 2 years ago, but it did not help. I was impressed that in spite of all this, she was so optimistic and cheerful. And most importantly, she was self-assured.

For the first time I met someone who fully understood me. I had a best friend Jack, but he had never saw the world through my eyes. I was really happy and we laughed when

Alexandra told that once she could not distinguish her dog and she brought home a pariah-dog.

At home, I thought about Alexandra (I still remember Alexandra) and her words: «Despite everything,life is a wonderful thing, Theo».

                                                                                                   

The Adventure of English - Birth of a Language

This video is one part of the British television series, that called “The Adventure of English”. This programme tells about the history of the English language from its modest beginnings around 500 AD.
  Melvyn Bragg is a presenter of this series. Moreover, he is best known to the British public as a radio and television broadcaster.  In the television series, Bragg explains the origins and spelling of many words based on the times in which they were introduced into the growing language that would eventually become modern English.  Melvyn Bragg travels through Britain to tell the story of how an insignificant German dialect, which only arrived in the country in the fifth century, evolved into a language which is now spoken and understood by more people than any other around the world.  The video is divided into four parts:The first one tells story about trying  to destroy this language. The second programme tells how it survived and how it fought back.The third part tells how the English language took on the power blocks of church and state.And the last one tells how it became the language of Shakespeare.  In addition, during all video Melvyn Bragg is talking to language expert Kathryn A. Lowe, who tells many interesting things about history of the English language. She offers wonderful insight into the evolution of Anglo-Saxon and Old English.  This is a very informative and interesting video. You can learn many important things that you never heard before. During watching this video you are one step closer to unlocking some mystery with every minute and time just flies.
